Dr. Lyons: My name is Steve Lyons. I’m an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. I was actually the first to graduate college out of my entire family, let alone go to medical school. It was interesting to be the first. After my residency in Michigan, I went to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City for one year of specialized training in joint replacement. I do around 550 procedures a year. That consists of primary hip, primary knee, and revision hip and knee arthroplasties or replacements. I put myself in the patient’s position. How would I want to be treated? How would I want someone to explain things to me? I’m very involved with a lot of companies, orthopedic companies, as a designing surgeon. I’m involved in applying some of the science to joint replacement (
01:00) and how do we improve yet further, both knee and hip replacements. I’m a car enthusiast. I really enjoy the F1 circuit and the F1 series of racing. Once upon a time, I actually wanted to be a neurosurgeon. Although neuroscience was very interesting, I didn’t find it as gratifying as I did orthopedics. Specifically joint replacement because what I find with the joint replacement is, you can take someone that has stiff immobile joints, regain their mobility, and get them back into society, and back into living. Our ability to regain that after a joint replacement is a huge win for the patient.
